Tokyo Game Show: Alice Madness Returns Trailer

Alice in Wonderland is a all time classic story, now told in two video versions a couple other older games as well. Of course, it is also in book form for those wondering where it all started. However, Madness Returns (being created by EA) seems to take place after all of those events in Wonderland, giving it a lot of creative freedom to create whatever sort of story they want. With how bizarre and messed up the story is in the original, we could be in for a lot of surprises. The visuals look good, and the atmosphere seems spot on from this small trailer. The questions is: Can the game play be good enough for this to be a success? Time will tell, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was a little excited. Screenshots after the jump.

Am I mistaken or does this look like a shooter?
If there's ANYTHING Alice in Wonderland shouldn't be, it's a shooter.

Just because she has a pepper shaker that shoots something doesn't make the game a shooter. I think it's more of an action adventure, similar to Zelda.

Yeah, you're right. But it looks like a flamethrower, doesn't it? If the player is given a flamethrower as an item, I think it's safe to assume it has fairly heavy combat elements. I don't think a game based on Alice in Wonderland should have much if any combat.
I think something in the vein of Silent Hill would be more appropriate. By which I mean emphasis on atmosphere, curiosity and apprehension. Not blood, rape and murder.

Not really. If you look, there is a projectile hitting the middle enemy that came directly from the shaker. It is clearly not a flamethrower, that is just the explosion effect on the shot.

As for violence and fighting in Alice - bottom line is this game ISN'T alice in wonderland, it's a an even more demented adventure game that is mos tlikely built on combat, just like Zelda. It will be creepy, and I am sure the story is solid...'

but yeah.

Yeah, that's a reasonable conclusion. If it WERE Alice in Wonderland, I think I'd love this game, though. Then again, maybe that much "WTF" would be counter-intuitive to an enjoyable gameplay experience.

...Then again, EarthBound exists, soooo...
